Your product is not your brand

A good product gives people something to buy. A good brand gives them a reason to choose it.

The two are connected. They are not the same.

Products compete on what they do

Features matter. Quality matters. Price matters. Convenience matters. But very few categories are won by functional difference alone for long.

Competitors catch up. Formats repeat. Claims begin to sound the same. That is where brand starts doing commercial work.

Brands compete on meaning

A brand gives the product a point of view. It tells people what the business believes, how it sees the category and what choosing it says about them.

Distinctive is more valuable than different

What matters is becoming distinctive. A recognisable idea. A consistent tone. A clear visual world. A story people can connect back to you.

Difference can be temporary. Distinction compounds.

The product proves the promise

Brand cannot rescue a weak product. But a strong product without a clear brand often leaves value on the table.

The best brands make the product and the idea reinforce each other. The product proves the promise. The brand gives the promise meaning.

The question is not only what you sell. It is what people should remember when the product is no longer in front of them.
